An ‘escape of water’, whether it’s caused by burst pipes, blocked drains or a leaky washing machine is probably of the most common claim in property insurance due to cold weather in the winter. Low temperatures cause water sitting in your pipes to freeze and expand, causing a crack in the pipework and eventually an escape of water.

‘Flood damage’ is caused by events outside the home, such as a river bursting its banks, or seawater coming over coastal defences, sewer flooding and groundwater flooding. Flooding is becoming more common in the UK so if you live in high-risk area, obtaining flood insurance at a price you can afford is a good idea. Immediate impacts of flooding can include loss of human life, damage to property and infrastructure, and destruction of crops and livestock. Examples of long-term impacts include the interruption to communication networks and critical infrastructure (such as power plants, roads, hospitals, etc.)
